Infant Memorial

Ancient Memorial Monuments

The death of a child, especially an infant, is quite possibly the worst thing that can happen to a parent. The sudden death of an infant brings with in grief, sorrow and confusion. Every parent wants to preserve the memory of his or her little one's, memory in a tasteful way. Finding an appropriate memorial for your infant can be difficult as well as devastating. Carefully reviewing your options is one way to make this process a little bit easier.

If your infant was lost at birth, you may choose cremation. Cremation is a particularly popular option for those who do not want to worry about placing their little one in a local cemetery, especially if there is a question as to whether the cemetery will always be local. Cremating the remains and placing them in a special urn will allow grieving parents the comfort of knowing they will never have to leave their infant behind. Special sealed brass boxes are ideal for this purpose. This gives the illusion of being solid, as the seams are cleverly hidden during construction. The box can be etched with whatever the parent wishes. Alternatively, the ashes may be scattered at a favorite place. If you choose this option, consider making a donation in the child's name as a memorial.

Another option for ashes is a memorial bench. The stone benches, typically placed in cemeteries (although in some instances they may be placed in a private garden) generally have several slots in the seat for placing ashes. Many parents choose to make this their final resting place as well. The back of the bench can be etched or engraved as desired. Use this area for the family name, an inspirational verse, or other embellishment. Given names, birth and death dates and more can be individually engraved on the seat of the memorial bench.

Many cemeteries now include an area specially dedicated to children and parents wishing a traditional burial and memorial will most likely have their infant placed here. Headstones very greatly in shape, style and type, so it is quite simple to customize the memorial. Stones can be polished or colored, engraved with verses, angels or other embellishments or include a photo of the child. Flat memorials, flush with the ground are a popular choice, although the larger, upright memorials often make more of a visual impact.

When designing the engravings for the memorial, the child's name and birth and death dates are a must. Additional embellishments are common. Consider adding angles, birds, flowers or religious symbols to the memorial. Another nice option is a simple line of poetry. Many infant memorials contain a line similar to "Taken too soon." You may want to add additional information such as: "Beloved son (daughter) of…." These additional details finish the memorial nicely and become a solid reminder of the connection.

Choosing an appropriate memorial for your infant is difficult. Be sure to rely on the expertise of the men and women that work in the funeral home and cemetery you have chosen. They will be able to assist you in making this very difficult but important choice.
